He stood up and sighed. ‘I couldn’t follow them all the way with the drones.’ He grinned. ‘So camped myself out on the cliffs down at Mangersta for a week, and caught them red-handed. Footage of them dumping the fish. And they had no idea I was even there.’ He turned back to the computer. ‘I’ve edited together a wee sequence.’ Two mouse clicks opened a video file and one of the screens filled with the footage. It was clearly shot from some considerable height above the cages in East Loch Roag. A large hydrolyzer, like the boat Niall had pointed out to him yesterday, was hoovering dead fish from the bottom of the cages through a wide flexi-tube, sorting them into big blue plastic containers that were then swung by crane on to hovering support boats. When the deck of one was fully loaded, it set off for the mouth of the loch, and another took its place.

The clarity of the images was remarkable, the camera zooming in and out, focusing on different elements of the operation. Men in orange overalls could be seen moving about on the decks of the various boats, hooking up crates to cranes and guiding them to safe landing spots on other vessels.

The sequence cut then to grainy distant shots from shore of a fully laden service boat heading south along the coast. Then more aerial images, at Mangersta this time, of a smaller crane offloading crates one at a time from the service boat to a smaller craft that shuttled back and forth, in and out of the geodha, where the contents of each crate were tipped out on to the vast and growing pile of dead salmon on the beach.
